1.2 Academic support system
SMP Saintek - Uhamka Boarding School is a laboratory school for junior and senior high school of Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka - College of Education. It is a private boarding school with free tuition. Students stay and live here for the whole semester, but their learning and academic materials such as books, newspaper, computer, internet, broadcasting equipment and others are available in the vicinity of the school.
Educators make use of digital and non-digital instructional materials when teaching the learners. Most of the time, they use books, board works, and PowerPoint presentations in their teaching-learning processes. With the influence of 21st Century, the teachers and students are also indulged into digital activities like creating videos, posting videos in their official websites and social media account of the boarding school, and doing podcasts.
1.3 Teaching system
The teachers in here uses the experiential learning and independent learning. It is more of a student-centered learning wherein the students are more reliable for their own learning progress. The major role of the teacher is not the dispenser of knowledge but the facilitator of student-learning development and progression.
1.4 Materials and other learning sources
As I observe in my Resource Teacher's class, he utilizes closed-group discussion often. Also, most of the activities are given by their teachers. For the morning session, students need to attend their classes until 12:00 noon or 01:00 in the afternoon. In the afternoon, it is the session for the students to do their activities independently. The teachers are only there to supervise them.
Books, online video clips, pictures, printed learning materials, websites, and PowerPoint presentations are also used as instructional materials.
1.5 Measurement and evaluation system
Every after topic, my Resource Teacher always make the students do a pre-test or post-test to assess their prior knowledge and their learnings after the discussion.
He would check the papers of the students individually. When many of the students fail the assessment, he will repeat discussing the topic again. In contrast, they would proceed to the next lesson if almost all of the students got a high school.
1.6 Curriculum
In Indonesia, there are two types of curriculums that they are following in high school. These two are the following:
(1) Independent Curriculum
The Independent Curriculum - Merdeka Curriculum, formerly known as the prototype curriculum, was created as a more flexible curriculum framework as part of the learning recovery effort. It also placed an emphasis on essential content and helped students develop their character and competence.
The primary features of this program that facilitate learning recovery are:
- Project-based learning for the development of soft skills and character according to the Pancasila student profile.
- Focus on essential material so that there is sufficient time for in-depth learning of basic competencies such as literacy and numeracy.
- Flexibility for teachers to carry out differentiated learning according to the abilities of students and make adjustments to the context and local content.
(2) Curriculum 13 (K13)
Curriculum 2013 has three evaluation facets: cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor. This curriculum is different from the last one in that it places more of an emphasis on topic integration, character education, and theme lesson delivery. (K. Yulianti 2015)
